Based on my own interviews in recent weeks, reasons why young adults are moving back in with parents are pretty varied -- college closures, unemployment, wanting more space, help with childcare, assisting older/at-risk parents who are staying home, etc.

It is shocking that the percentage of young adults living with parents has increased from 29 percent in 1960 to 52 percent as of June 2020. Even in February, before the pandemic hit, the percentage was high at 47percent. The data shows the economy isn’t working for young adults.

The economy is not necessarily working for the parents. Part of the significance of this move is that it is part of a broad societal movement.
