Distracts the eye more so that you have a harder time distinguishing ads from native results. Results in more ad clicks and therefore more revenue.

I’m 100% certain goog will try to ”normalize” ads through design treatments like this one, so they don’t stand out like a sore thumb. that’s their business model.
"will" try? For sure! I mean, that's been the continuous story of Google Search's UI for the past 15 years or so. Remember the good old days when the ads were in shaded boxes? We (and GOOG) were so innocent then. :/
