In this entry I take a brief walk through analytics history, note how it ceased to be a major point of contention in the 2010s and how, whatever you think about that, it's led to a lot of stuff that really sucks.

The weirdest thing about this -- not included in the post, but on my mind -- was how there is a huge swath of fans who magically started to groove on analytics the exact moment it became clear to them that it was a great way to depress player salaries.

Like, that was ALWAYS a part of it -- and I, along with tons of other earlier adopters/appreciators were always aware of that. The key thing is how your thoughts about it all changed, if at all, once you began to appreciate the implications of it.

There's a power thing to it too. Stuff seems cooler and more benign when it's an insurgency and begins to look very different once it becomes the stuff of the establishment. Some reflexively oppose the establishment. Some flock to things only once the establishment embraces it.

And, yeah, there's reason to criticize people who adhere too strongly to either mindset. And, yeah, I include myself in that too.
