Some people shake hands. Others bow. Some use chopsticks, others forks. We speak in dialects. Whales, it turns out, do similar things. My cover story on the cultural lives of orcas, sperm whales, humpbacks + belugas, w/amazing pics

Great annotation of a piece for , in which the main character is a boat captain in Antarctica who "just does not like talking." "I have recordings that have just endless, endless, blank spaces with silence."

Huh. Months into a nonsense audit in AZ that has found nothing, 5 GOP lawmakers in Washington want to audit election results here. And if that audit proves exactly what they allege (which is nonsense)? Biden still wins by hundreds of thousands of votes. Huh.

This story about Portland is devastating. Read to the last line, when you may have a visceral reaction like I did.

Gov issues vaccine mandate for state workers. WSU already has its own. But WSU's football coach, who, it so happens, is also the state's highest paid employee, isn't vaccinated and won't say why. Even WSU fan websites are irate.

Something I think about a lot: so many peoples' careers are made and shaped by others (more senior, more influential etc) who decided to believe in them.

I know Tigres is missing a few of their players, but their roster is worth $82M and six months ago lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup Final. Sounders are absolutely ruthless tonight.
