OK, here is the Way of the Crab solution to Nelson Goodman's "New Riddle of Induction" aka "grue paradox". I'm doing this on Twitter for the hell of it, inspired by 's podcast and the kind encouragment of and MEGATHREAD:>

New book from Dehaene! "We are unaware of our own unawareness—and, therefore, we are absolutely convinced that we have seen all there is to see." Attention is central in learning: it is the bottleneck that determines what enters consciousness and is processed more deeply.

I would extend it: The unbroken egg, an assumption of a lower entropy past, is *what we mean by* an explanation of the presence of the broken egg. END. Thank you.

To paraphrase from his great book "From Eternity to Here": The broken egg on the sidewalk is a "record" of the prior unbroken egg, *but only if you assume a lower entropy past*. 14/

This is a pretty radical idea. It would mean that it is futile to look for explanations of the low entropy state of the early universe since explanation simply means "describe in terms of a low entropy boundary condition". 13/

In this way we can see that the thermodynamic arrow can be seen as a product of the fundamental mechanics of induction from which we build our world. 12/

So the future remains vague, we have no records of it, and entropy will increase. 11/

In fact, in order for entropy to *decrease* in this future time direction, we would need an extremely specific present *microstate*. We can't know our present microstate, and including such a state in our description would take a huge quantity of information.10/

Having now arrived at a compact description of the present, the other time direction is unconstrained and remains vague and tending to higher entropy. 9/

This becomes "the past", complete with its sense of fixity imbued by its endowment of "records" like tracks in micca or photographs. 8/

So given a present macrostate and assuming some directionless but ordered time dimension, a lower entropy boundary condition is always favoured as an explanation. 7/

This "single common cause" is one hallmark of a parsimonious and hence low entropy explanation. This is even though the low entropy state itself is a priori extremely unlikely! 6/

A single high-energy particle creating a track in mica is a simpler description than many independent random lower energy events just happening to create the same linear track. 5/

A low entropy configuration of a system contains less information, and is therefore a parsimonious boundary condition. 4/

Causal explanations are always more *parsimonious* descriptions of the target state. That parsimony needs to be achieved by some combination of compact dynamical laws and compact boundary conditions. 3/

Maudlin seems to have a strong realist view of time direction motivated inter alia by the mechanics of explanation. In fact, the mechanics of explanation are a feature of the thermodynamic arrow. 2/

Great stuff from Guy. Crabby likes Austin for his focus on the importance language as the medium of philosophy. Any technical terms always end up being defined on ordinary language, so we had better understand that first!

As Rossetti said to Millet, opium is just as good for soul pain as for nose pain.

Some interesting slides here. I'm never clear how the internalist and SMC views are really in conflict. There is a lot to unpack about "inferring an outer world". Is it necessary to a world model that it be labelled "outer"?

To take the opening example: P1. All dogs are animals. P2. Fido is a dog Crabby thinks what's going on in P1 is really: P1. P(animal | dog) = 1 This premise when not true by fiat often represents the simplest model of observations (e.g. white swans, etc) 2/2
