I'm well aware... there's a difference between supporting a foundation and employing developers full time versus the tipjar approach of open collective (you also take a 10% cut versus 0% at a foundation), I'm overdue on a longer blog post on this topic :)
Our 10% (which is a classic fiscal sponsorship fee) is split in two. 5% for us and 5% for the fiscal entity. So when we work with another foundation, we only take 5% and it’s up to them to define their commission.
Most foundations take a cut too btw. They need to finance their overhead. Our goal is to build software to streamline that process, scale it and make it more transparent. We believe the entire ecosystem will benefit from this.
Lastly, our model is not tipjar. Many have tried that before. Our model is to push for subscriptions to make it sustainable over time. Look at Babel & Webpack. They are now making enough recurring revenue to pay people. We are far from done, but w/ your help we will get there.
I don't have an opinion on the % open collective charges, but I don't think it's accurate to say foundations take 0%. Any org doing such isn't going to be able to maintain operations for very long.
yes you're right, when I write my blog on this topic, it's a bit complicated! my whole thing is that the way to sustainability is to companies actually pay people to work on open source part/full time versus just consuming
