/ It's a massive conflict for the people's lawyer (DA) to represent the people in a case where he's prosecuting his own former client. And the outcome here suggests the conflict was very real & very detrimental to Boudin's clients (the people).

/ Even if you believe (as I do) that 3 strikes is bad law, that doesn't mean you don't take prior behavior into a/c when sentencing. First time offenders should generally be sentenced at the low end of the range. Repeat offenders at the max end.

/ McAlister was facing 2 counts of 2nd degree robbery, which under CA law can be punished w/ up to 5 yrs in prison. As a repeat offender, why not give him 2 x 5 = 10 years, served consecutively? That would have kept him in prison until 2025 instead of being released immediately.

/ Even after the terrible (& conflict-riddled) decision to release him in Mar 2020, there were many more opportunities to re-incarcerate him. On several occasions (including ~11 days before he killed these 2 innocents) he was arrested for new crimes.

/ Boudin says he relied on parole officers to remand McAlister b/c it would be easier than getting remand for the new offences. That's a huge cop-out. I can't believe that if Boudin had gone to court & opposed bail each time McAlister was arrested, he'd have failed each time.

/ It may be that our parole officers & judges are also increasingly complicit in endangering society by failing to hold repeat criminals to account (by refusing bail, giving appropriate prison sentences, etc). But Boudin is squarely responsible for this one.

/ I strongly support crim justice reform. Too many innocent folks in jail & too many others serving excessively long sentences. But you can't go to the other extreme & just not hold anyone to account. People have to take some responsibility for their own actions.

/ Our govt is ruthlessly good at taxing & fining its law-abiding citizens. Forgot it was street cleaning? Oh, sorry, here's a $73 fine. Good luck getting it waived. But commit multiple crimes that endanger people, we'll let you go & give you gift cards.

/ I don't doubt Boudin believes fervently in the rightness of his cause. But he's dangerously misguided. He is not only endangering the public but the cause of crim justice reform. Voter backlash will lead to harsh laws like 3 strikes.
