It is a system failure. But don't talk about "the system" like it's some law of physics over which you have no control. You're a huge part of the system! So are the judges who keep releasing repeat offenders & parole violators on bail.https://twitter.com/chesaboudin/status/1345060956733198336 …

This is a terrible tragedy and awful end to a brutal year. It is a system failure that resulted in irreversible harm to two families. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. We will hold the man who did this accountable. We will support the families of the victims

Very specifically re the "system": * When he was arrested on 11/6/20 for burglary, etc while already on parole, did your office have any involvement in processing him? If so, did you request remand but a judge overruled & released? Or did you not oppose bail? * Dec 20 - same Q.

Q: "Is there any non-violent crime you think deserves a custodial sentence?" @chesaboudin : "In general? No". Do you think it advances the cause of crim justice to allow parole violators & repeat offenders to roam free & victimize more people?https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-55372462 …

We have too many innocent people in jail, & others serving unjustly long sentences for minor crimes. Voters increasingly agree. But the surest way to set back reform is to go the other extreme & give repeat offenders free rein to victimize innocent folks.https://twitter.com/cpoetzscher/status/1344496500236140545 …

3 strikes is a bad & unjust law. But craziness like this is why voters support it. You're setting back the cause of crim justice reform, not helping it. We shouldn't have 3 strikes. But at the same time, repeat offenders like this shouldn't get bail or early probation.

Giving non-violent first-time offenders chance to learn & make amends w/out jail often makes sense. So does treating rather than jailing addicts & mentally ill. But at some point a custodial sentence (whether in prison or mental health facility) is required for repeat offenders.
