Well, is prison for reform or punishment? If it's punishment then maybe we should just have the death penalty for most serious crimes. Also food for thought.

Prison exists primarily for the deterrent effect. It's the reason your local bank wasn't robbed 50 times today.

Long-term deterrents actually don't work very well in human psychology actually. People are only scared by things happening in the here and now. The psychology research on this is pretty interesting.

Same for the opposite, rewards. Research shows that routine “rewards” like extra end-of-the-year payments or predictable bonuses end up being an expectation and lose their power as reward fairly quickly.

What does work as deterrent is boots on the ground or cops on the beat. A higher chance of caught actually works as deterrent. Increasing penalties doesn’t as much because perpretrators expect not to be caught…
