Hey. We know you’re upset. We’ve been hearing it for ages. But guess what- we’re industry pros now & anime and manga were supremely influential in our development as working artists. It happened- we succeeded- even though you threatened our grades & told us we wouldn’t get work.pic.twitter.com/wwy0JMJr0W

I'm so sorry that you never allowed yourself to experience the vastness of the genre-- the good and the bad. I guess xenophobia is a lot easier when you oversimplify and stereotype.pic.twitter.com/ckyunU4RHZ

And look, you pushed back so hard that an entire boom of creative visual storytelling emerged over the past several years-- one completely dependent on the introduction and admiration of Japanese animation! You sure did try your best, though! A for effort.pic.twitter.com/L7WbmiaXFA

Art history has shown us, again and again, the folly in underestimating and rejecting aesthetics and process that aren't mainstream in their time/place-- but you call yourself an artist and you turn around and teach other aspiring artists to regurgitate the same, boring history.pic.twitter.com/ByJpKuap8Y

Open up the gates and recognize your role as a teacher and mentor-- support young and aspiring artists, acknowledge and encourage their interests. I often wonder if I would have stayed in animation school had my mentors not squashed my passion for my interests in animation.pic.twitter.com/XYLMkQLxls

Anime and manga are just genres-- styles & methods vary greatly. There are so many amazing examples of quality visuals. The road doesn't end w/ Disney, Professor so-and-so. I mean for real-- look at John Smith. You can't judge an entire genre by a screenshot you saw once & hated.pic.twitter.com/KvGtMzeGsE

TL/DR: Anime is a genre, not a single visual. Banning artists from exploring the genre in your classroom is irresponsible & problematic. The industry will grow & change, regardless of how hard you push back. Your students will outlive you. ✌🏻pic.twitter.com/KZ3Q4Pcpwx

I love the point you are making, but anime and manga are not genres, they are mediums. Comics and animation are not genres. Horror, comedy, romance are genres. You could argue that anime and manga are styles, but I disagree with that too.

My response seems dismissive- I apologize! It's a good point and worth noting. I was- incorrectly- using genre to describe animation and sequential art as a subset of visual storytelling. Medium is clearer and more correct. ✌🏻

That's great! This is in response to the Ringling Department Head doubling down on discrediting anime and manga as legitimate areas of study.

Totally agree with you. I stopped doing what I loved to do "fine art" (admittedly, I love the printmaking I did too, but that was later) and now I look at the amazing fantasy genre art out there and I'm so mad / discouraged about how much ground I've lost.

I think there's also a thread of upper classism in that whole view: only rich people who don't have to worry about selling work are allowed to count as "fine" artists, and people who are making work to sell are low brow. It's financial gate keeping as well.

It was shameful how many tutour's I encountered who's eyes glazed over or who openly sneerd at this 'gutter medium' so beneath their precious artform. But it is our generation that will be taking on their roles soon enough, which is heartening.
