Given that I've reached a point where I'm struggling to find motivation to even play games anymore - including ones I'm really excited for! - I can say that this statement is patently false.https://twitter.com/GrantCardone/status/1204411169911406595 …

I've dedicated my life to games ever since 3yr-old-me picked up my brother's TurboGrafx 16 controller. So many games have touched me emotionally, inspired me creatively, and challenged me to think outside my comfort zone. I desperately want that again but I just...can't

The guilt probably isn't helping ("I'm a game designer! I should be playing games! Why am I not playing games?! Can I really call myself a designer?") But yeah, you can totally burn out on all aspects of your passion when you're immersed in its creation all day, every day.

I think I started...6 games this year? * Kingdom Hearts (24h) * Kingdom Hearts 3 (2h) * Untitled Goose Game (2h) * Let's Go, Eevee! (10h) * Sea of Solitude (3h) * We Met In May (1h) Only finished SoS and WMiM. Started Gris and FE:3H, but only played about 30m.

It's not that I didn't finish them because I didn't enjoy them. In fact, they were awesome! I'm just...tired. Games frequently require a mental commitment that I just haven't been capable of making for the last year or two. Hell, I can't even commit to TV if the episodes are 45m.

I do play a lot of Love Nikki, though. And Sudoku. I've gotten REALLY good at Sudoku this year. Basically all I can handle these days are simple, mindless puzzles. (Not that I'd call Love Nikki "simple", I just know mechanics so thoroughly that it requires almost no thought)

I'm hoping in 2020 I can push myself through the inertia and play more. Provided I keep it on the "build a habit" side of things instead of "forced chore", it'd definitely help rekindle my passion. Or at least pull me out of this 'games depression' I've clearly been in.

I will tell you that I went through the same thing this year. In 2018 I played more than 90 games and this year I played less than 15. Partly that was burnout from the negative reaction to my last game. I went back to basics and played CoD and Stardew Valley and Factorio.

Yeah, I think I'm going to kick off next year with something I've played before. Considering the FFXII or FFX/X-2 remasters, since they were HUGE for me in high school. I keep thinking of going back to Stardew, but I already have a 120hr run where I did literally everything

Giving myself permission to play games without an aim or for "research" has been a big part of it. Just cutting it down to things I know I am going to want to enjoy has been really helpful. Control, Resident Evil 2 remake, that sort of thing.
