If so much of your identity is wrapped around your ability to beat "difficult" games that the idea of accessibility options (THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE) threatens your very sense of self, maybe it's time to take a hard look at your life https://twitter.com/JCWintheflesh/status/1111715059456053248 …

Bc that's what this is. It's never actually been about dev intentions. It's a way to feel superior to other players based on ultimately arbitrary criteria. And when we give options that allow others to play in a way that's fun for them, it "ruins" it for so-called hardcores

These players don't get intrinsic value out of exploring a game and overcoming it's challenges. They need extrinsic validation for it to mean anything to them. That's why they respond so violently to different play styles. Because suddenly their way isn't the only way.

I remember a few years ago I got harassed on Twitter for 3 days because I was excited over learning there was a Dragon Age mod that'd let me skip the combat because all I gave a shit about was the story. All I could think was, who gives a shit how I play? It doesn't affect you

Except apparently it does. Because the very fact that I could play a game by side-stepping the hard parts "cheapened" their accomplishments. Stop using games as the only way for getting validation from your peers. They're games. We're all here to have fun

Also, if you do want that validation, nothing's stopping you from adding limitations on yourself. Like the no-hit Soulsborne run. This works both ways.

I have a lot of feelings about this from the design side because a designer who gets mad that a player "isn't playing it right" and tries to brute force a specific way to play is a shitty designer. Give players options to fucking play around. That includes accessibility

There's a lot of that in AAA as well - it's a byproduct of producer driven cultures where becuase you spent a lot of money on a thing (scripted sequence, feature) that you end up being asked to force players to have a specific experience so they see the expensive content.
