    White and/or privileged parents--when we systematically disinvest from our public school system, underpay and disrespect teachers, and then hire private tutors for our own children, we are far more detrimental than those 10K words.

    There are also cultural causes. Sure, those 10K words (the oft repeated idea that families in poverty speak 10K words less to their kids, preventing them from developing their vocab). But this article is so important b/c is shows another side of the culture conversation...

    Literacy is basis of success for kids--esp from historically marginalized backgrounds. We can't sleep on this. There are structural causes, inc that nearly 1/2 of public schools have teaching vacancies, esp in special ed & elementary grades.

    This piece is critical. And it's not a reductive "learning loss" argument. We can hold two things in our minds & hearts at once: kids' mental health is tattered AND we need to teach them how to read.
