Our species (& more recently, cultural) embrace of the abstractive realm of ideas seems to have demanded an accompanying sacrifice in tactility. I see minds functioning off of metaphors as having diminishing returns on consciousness.
What is a conscious being that is removed from its immediate environment? Transcendent? Maybe. Alienated in a fragile environment that demands our attention to keep it alive? Most definitely. I think this is a meta-reason for our current debasement of substrate.
I had a nightmare once where my consciousness was uploaded to the web and then it was just loose without any constraints or embodiment.
Define substrate as you are using it, please.
