If there's one skill we need going into this weird internet age, it's discernment or choice making. Paradoxically, our immense freedom of choice is in itself a kind of slavery (to the terror of opportunity cost). This is fundamental in a new how-to-human educational curriculum

Circa 1996 I was working at Pennsylvania dept of ed on teacher training for using the internet. My words verbatim "discernment is the first and most important skill you have to teach". Didn't happen. 😔

So: the most important thing about the most important thing in life is attention, and in schools, IMO, we often screw up how we teach it. If you use threats and coercion to force kids to “pay” attention... ...you set people up for dysfunctional relationships their whole life pic.twitter.com/DILk1zn2pN

The paradox of choice. Even not choosing is a choice. "For the first time...substantial and rapidly growing numbers of people have choices. For the first time, they will have to manage themselves. And society is totally unprepared for it." Peter Druckerhttps://www.sloww.co/you-have-a-choice/ …

Discernment implies a standard that can be referred too. So it would seem that epistemology and ethics are the starting point? Codifying these in a universal way seems to be the struggle of our time (and all times). See @MIRIBerkeley et al for the difficulties involved.
