I need a word other than sorry. I find myself saying it all too often, and then backpedal when I realise I dont actually mean sorry (the true meaning of the word has a lottt of weight behind it), rather I'm just expressing that I was preoccupied, am switching attention etc.

I'm finding it hard to come up with concrete examples, but though I've tried to reduce my 'sorry' usage, I still have this urge to say it because I don't seem to have another word that aptly suits the meaning I'm trying to convey. This is weird and hurting my brain.

you're saying I should be positive instead of needlessly finding a way to self deprecate and feel shame? scandalous, and canceled

Enthusiasm for the new direction automatically implies disengagement from the old path. Shame and self-deprecation actually can be a form of fixation, which actually keeps you stuck on the old path. It can be a sort of “shadow narcissism”
