I find it utterly painful to live without creating. It's the greatest struggle I have. And yet, I find myself completely unable. I think I place to much pressure on myself, and therefore fear trying anything lest it isn't a masterpiece.
I know I can help fix this issue with a routine slot of time where I can slowly chip away at something. Not for any grand purpose. Just to see progress. But even this I have failed at. I now think it might be linked to my immense distractibility, my choice paralysis, and ...
most importantly, my lack of community. Perhaps if I had truly close relationships with others that had similar drives and interests, that would lead to some kind of accountability and greater support when I slip. I don't know. Everything I try seems to fail.
P.s. I'm trying a new goal setting tactic where I'm saying that I must make something (anything) for a particular person by the time the next gift giving holiday comes around. Will update if it works.
Just keep on trying different things and see what brings you joy. I find that cooking and baking stuff for the family and friends, the hobby that I need to fill my creation drive. Took me some years to start to get into it before I tried tens of other stuff with that same feeling
of pain for not being able to have my creation drive fulfilled as everything that I tried was too difficult / took lot of time.
Feel ya! I actually once noticed my own paralysis at filling in a mandala with some colour. I reflected on this and realised I had a deep fear of putting something mediocre into permanence.
So I committed to sucking (as @visakanv puts it) and wrote the crappiest "poetry" everyday. Churned out about 12-15 nonsensical, auto-writing pieces a day at one point. And now I'm so very comfortable writing crap in a journal nobody will see.
I just stumbled across @visakanv's "Letter to a Young Songwriter" blog post and thought I'd put it here. Seems like a good summary of creativity advice. I like the emphasis to "be prolific" (so prolific that you don't recognize your own work).
