I read Henry Cloud's "Necessary Endings" when I quit my job to do something else; it was a plainspoken, clarifying book for work & relationships. Too bad he doesn't come up much in the non-secular self improvement idea space (he sometimes gets filed under "Christian self help").
"We change our behavior when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. Consequences give us the pain that motivates us to change." — Henry Cloud We delay this helpful pain signaling when we dissociate. And boy do we like to dissociate.

Choosing better options requires there to BE better options. If they are available to us, and we are aware of it, we'll choose it. Brains are good calculating machines. They do whatever is best given their available options.
