This seemingly paradoxical trade-off between freedom and security/certainty is important when considering our psychological needs + desires. Especially if we want to design better communities and life-styles going forward.

There's no path to follow. The world is a completely different place to what it was 15 years ago. We're immersed within it so it's hard to see, but we're going through the most transformative time in the history of humanity (so far). There is no path -- we have to forge our own

Which is psychologically tough. Society hasn't caught up to the 'new' world that's constantly in flux. We're being fed old narratives to live our lives by, but we know they don't hold any water now. So what do we do? Whatever we think is best.. that's a lot of responsibility

problem is more information = more pressure for choice-making i guess this pressure on the individual could be dampened by an environment where we have better trust in the choices of others, and clearer understandings of what choices lead to a particular outcomes

And thus ignorance is bliss...

I wonder if artificial intelligence would yearn for the same feeling of freedom and autonomy, just as humans do. Similarly computers can be narrow application with a mapped out path of clearly identifiable ‘success’.

I think the problem is that when you aren't free, you aren't getting what you need to make good decisions, especially when your choices are mostly crappy. The "freedom" to choose the "lesser of many evils" is not really freedom. Freedom is when you have options suited to you.

You gotta script your critical moves then b. Make sure that you offload all of the inertia for thinking about your hardest decisions to the present so your response to them when you encounter them is near automatic.

Having all the choices is always better. It just feels overwhelming when we only have a lot of crappy choices available. None of which suit our needs. That's not real freedom, in my opinion. But, also, we need a good search function in the world!https://twitter.com/thewiseturtle/status/1133414100594151429 …
