From past experience, I think breaking out of your regular pattern of sleep has adverse short term affects. Am not sure though.

yep mostly because it messes with your circadian rhythm. but only negative short term effects are excessive daytime sleepiness. extended short-sleeping has no negative effects aparently

4-5 hour night if I have a morning shift. But then I can get 7/8 hours if I'm working nights. Often the change between these two can be one to two days. Not sustainable for me but it's not forever!
