Can you point me towards any games that are artistic expressions and/or offer a way to explore reality in some meaningful way, with a seriously robust model of life, that is also totally free and offered without any money-making goals? I've heard of very, very few.

Running on an engine or world-map or some kind of algorithm or pattern that models reality well. Anything from Pokemon's go running on Google map data, to a Newtonian physics based model of rockets orbiting Earth, to using set theory and logic for exploring all possible ideas.
