Can you point me towards any games that are artistic expressions and/or offer a way to explore reality in some meaningful way, with a seriously robust model of life, that is also totally free and offered without any money-making goals? I've heard of very, very few.

You won't find many that are totally free + good bc things cost money and need to cover their costs of production. But rlly most indie games are not made at all to make money. Game devs are passionate and artists, and want above all to share enjoyable experiences with others

I've seen lots of games that are one of the three, either freeware (no ads, and no cost, not even donations), or art, or based on robust engineering, but I'm not sure I've seen all three at the same time, except for a few made by museums or media companies (like VR "journalism").
