if you could run an experiment in good-society-building from a clean slate, (let's say you have a new colony on mars) how would you run things?

My society would have a grand, overarching goal at all times. The space race brought humanity together to achieve something more than usual. Same idea here. IMO the biggest problem with empires is they stop aspiring and dedicate themselves to putting out fires until they go down.
I'm inclined to agree. Every cooperative society needs a good story. I'd make it a story about life, enabling it's welbeing & proliferation
