do I dislike hierarchy or do I dislike stupid people being in places where smart people should be

maybe hierarchies are fine if they're a) consensual and b) based on competence in the domain in question. but (a) is easy to influence w/ propaganda & advertising and (b) is hard to measure, especially when the timescale is short & the goal/environment is complex

What does a consensual hierarchy mean, exactly? I guess you mean something more specific by "hierarchy", because consent doesn't really count for much in a hierarchy (e.g, I don't have to give my consent to be the leaf node of my family tree, or worse at chess than Gary Kasparov)

I guess if the hierarchy is combined with some rules, and then those rules are enforced? e.g, "respect your elders", but you don't really feel like it, so you don't. You're still a part of the hierarchy, but you're not playing the game. Is that kind of what you mean?

hm. good point. but yeah pointing to my prev reply, id say the hierarchy ONLY exists when you're playing it. otherwise its just a categorical tree
