maybe hierarchies are fine if they're a) consensual and b) based on competence in the domain in question. but (a) is easy to influence w/ propaganda & advertising and (b) is hard to measure, especially when the timescale is short & the goal/environment is complex

and the failures of these institutionalised hierarchies are due to failures in the measurement of consent & competence. also the inflexibility of change as a response to decision-making. dynamic systems need to have this functionality built-in. rigidity is often weaknessThanks. You dislike being forced into situations where you're not free to choose who gets to make decisions that deeply affect you. It doesn't need to be a "smart" individual, just one who you believe has the ability to do what you want done.

thats what i meant by smart, perceived & actual competence at the task at hand. & true, but i think its more than that. im happy with people choosing things that affect me, as long as i trust their judgement.
