More than anything else, the internet is a network of servers speaking a common language/protocol for file transfer and packet switching, TCP/IP. This includes wireless connections.
On a more spiritual level, the internet is the humanities willingness to interconnect more meaningfully and efficiently.
For thousands of years, we've done this with verbal languages. Humanity tried to make it more efficient with easy-to-translate global verbal languages (International auxiliary languages) like Esperanto. It never took hold. Now we use computers as translators between languages.
