imagine the chaos that would ensue if the internet as we know it (basically google) suddenly ceased to exist everything would go to shit and yet, I guess this scenario is kind of possible so long as it is mediated and controlled by corporate & governmental entities

but alas, the biggest players have the most data, money, & training time. google is simply the best. do we go for efficiency at the expense of security?

How do those (tremendously valuable and effective) forms of human cooperation risk the loss of core infrastructure? And they’re risky compared to what?

+ risky not really in comparison to anything. i guess maybe to a theoretical p2p thing that doesnt have any central control. but mostly i view risk as pretty much correlating with the usefulness/level of integration of something. something could happen to threaten that stability

No chaos, at least not that much. There are already small decentralized groups would step up and provide these services instead, there is youtube (peertube), google(searx), twitter (Mastodon), facebook (diaspora) and other things that us geeks are running already.

People would develop a better language/protocol for sharing and networking computers. It would be the beginning of a more evolved internet. But it would take years before anyone knew about it. It took a quarter century (and the web) before the internet became a household name.

I guess internet 2.0 might be quicker to catch on, seeing as everyone already has some experience with the old one (and will be actively looking for an alternative)
