seriously can't justify doing uni assignments when there's so many more effective things i could be pursuing will i struggle with this till the day i die

Start a non-profit. With like-minded folks. It's the best education and work all rolled into one. And it pays you. Eventually, at least.

Oh, and I don't know how the legal stuff works there, but a similar option is a "non-profit business", so you don't have to worry about conflict of interest, or boards of directors, or whatever.
