Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug. I still eat meat even though I genuinely view it as wrong. And I do so because society makes it easy to do so and most people don't view it as an evil act. So I think there's some element to social norms as to why people do bad things.
True. Assuming that urge to conform is strong enough to inhibit our will power to do the good thing:)
