Do they have to show it if they don’t want to? Is there a risk that they’ll feel pressured to do something that the teacher feels is interesting rather than something they actually find interesting themselves?

The best education is real world non-profit work. There are real problems you want to solve. And you collaborate with everyone, of all skill sets and levels, to find solutions. No artificial "motivation" or point scoring or competition, just healthy problem solving.
