On the top of my mind killing someone once cannot fall into the experiment area, unless it is indeed a mistake.

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug. I still eat meat even though I genuinely view it as wrong. And I do so because society makes it easy to do so and most people don't view it as an evil act. So I think there's some element to social norms as to why people do bad things.
