On the one hand, your access to quality education should not be limited by your economic circumstances On the other, kids shouldn't to spend 16 years of their life in school (+uni) studying something they have no particular interest in just to stay afloat.

I completely agree. But people currently don’t *have* to do that; many wealthy people attend trade school or apprenticeships instead, while many poor people in debt went to college. Schools do their best to funnel people into academia even if it will make them sink.

True, but there is still a large cultural perception that everyone who doesn't take the apprenticeship route must if they want to make any sort of money. This is inspired by schools, family, and employers. At least this has been the case that I have seen in Australia :)
