Good point, though I think the term ‘sustained interest’ is important. It’s typically defined by its ability to keep us motivated in spite of successive failure/bad teachers etc. Culture will encourage certain interests, but suppress others, often claiming they’re ‘useless’.

The double fallacy is 1) ‘interest can be steered’. It can’t, anymore than sexual taste can. 2) ‘its primary function is to make you an expert in a field’. That is a possible by-product, but interests are contagious and evolving. It’s a knowledge-growing technology.
