"Virtue signalling is a pejorative term that refers to the conspicuous expression of moral values." - wiki Prejorative meaning expressing contempt. Conspicuous meaning attracting attention.

How can someone express moral values without attracting attention? Morals are such a contentious & touchy issue. From what I can tell virtue signalling incident is one part the person expressing the statement being unopen to criticism & also one part aggressive criticisers.

Replying to @cosimia_
I always see it framed as a type of bragging. Someone announcing the moral or positive viewpoints they hold - sometimes in contrast to their lack of action on these viewpoints. A sort of 'how woke are you?' competition. Though I wouldn't use this term to describe you tbh : )
