Morning musings: Motivation is a scarce resource. Why do some harbour more than others? Can motivation be cultivated, or is it innate? Further, can motivation be imposed externally, or does it come from within the individual?
this is bang on. people on the whole seem to be a great deal more anxious then they should be given the circumstances. makes me wonder - what is it that we are fearful of? what are we missing? is this the human disease or is the structure of our society off the mark?

Structure of society.
@DavidDeutschOxf outlines this brilliantly in some of the last chapters of his book The Beginning of Infinity. Human prehistory is a story of increasingly powerful creativity being used to maintain totally static societies.https://amzn.to/2BUGmPC -

If someone is anxious there is absolutely a reason for it. A biological one, I mean. The needs of the body are infinitely complex. The most dangerous position is to claim that someone "should be" fine, when they clearly are not. Reality doesn't make mistakes, in my experience.

Fair addition. though I imagine the function of anxiety to traditionally be something that propels you to remedy a life-threatening situation. modern life has very little in the way of life-threatening scenarios, but the feelings remain.

between fear & desire, this makes desire-based motivation hard to tap
