Morning musings: Motivation is a scarce resource. Why do some harbour more than others? Can motivation be cultivated, or is it innate? Further, can motivation be imposed externally, or does it come from within the individual?

Motivation is an emotional drive. Through childhood, we're taught to associate certain interpretation of an experience (that may (not) align with reality) with an emotion. Subsequent experiences via various brain circuits fine-tune our emotional responses. Our relationships to...

these emotions, determine our motivational response. From people I've spoken to, highly motivated people fall into two categories. Constant fear of some negative consequence or pleasure through achievement of some higher purpose (fulfilment).

Based on this, I think motivation, as a behavioural response) is something that comes from within but the negative consequence (is an external factor) whereas the fulfilment (is an internal factor).
