Motivation is great, but I think it's discipline that creates the framework for it. It seems that while highly successful people have no shortage of motivation, it's the discipline that got them there.

There's nothing *wrong* with extrinsic motivation. If I want money to raise my kids and that motivates me to work hard, that's from outside and its good. If I have intrinsic motivation to paint and I do it and my kids suffer because of lack of money, that's not good.

All motivation must be internal and external. The trick is balancing tradeoffs. If you have a mentor who you look up to and expects a lot of you, you latch onto their intention for you and it gives you a motivational boost. That's a good balance.
