I think the fact that there's only one and the fact that it's a "crisis" are related. Like if at a certain point in life people routinely have a "dental crisis". Do routine check-ups!

I would've said that 10 years ago, but changes in my own life (age 27) already cause me to doubt that.
I think you're describing outliers, not the average midlife crisis. It's more to do with opportunities narrowing and identity solidifying too quickly, *even if anticipated.* -
To give one example, I used to feel like an "old soul." Nowadays I'm surprised/disturbed that undergrads don't see me as someone of their age group. What!? I wasn't expecting to lose all the opportunities of a 21 y.o. so quickly! Extrapolate to age 50: this gap could break me!
