Consider self harm. As it goes, people often don't harm themselves with the intent of dying, but with the intent of feeling alive But there are better ways of feeling alive in the world. & the more extreme your coping mechanisms, the more resistant you'll be, always needing more

Have you looked at the practices of Leonardo da Vinci, esp. his methods of training his senses? Sounds familiar to what you’re describing, something I also do. Specifically, when I’m barbell training, I like to focus my grip on individual fingers when performing lifts.
