Just maybe... the universe is a being? If life becomes increasingly complex and efficient as the universe cools & expands, the being survives. Or at least lives longer.

If we think about life on Earth... the dominant creatures used to be huge. And not greatly smart. We're 1/50th the size and know maths, physics, DNA, and are beginning to change & make creatures. Perhaps future intelligent life will be 1/50th our size and 1000s times as smart?
