There's a second kind of agency, on the far side of the pessimism. That kind of agency is indomitable. It is not discouraged by doom, failure or suffering. That is the kind of will it will take for us to survive the future. Optimism is fragile. One must become relentless.https://twitter.com/rivatez/status/1088155646690619392 …

Similar vein: https://twitter.com/cosimia_/status/1083122569924960257?s=21 … Despair can be removed pessimism - the two are not always linked. Pessimism is essentially just risk management. Optimism is the path out, with a theoretical way to get there. Not to be confused with blind hope.

emily_ @cosimia_Excessive hope and nothing gets done because “it’ll all work out alright in the end.” Excessive despair and nothing gets done because “there’s no point in trying.” Balance the strengths of the two and you hit a powerful union capable of real world change and self-sustainability pic.twitter.com/hxp8BX9BNq1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I'm pessimistic about how our current systems & economics show no possible path to a healthy, meaningful existence on our planet. Fuck! I'm damned optimistic that we have built the technologies to collectively build the next systems & economics which will secure that existence.

So I'm with the thinking on this thread, because I don't see how you can arrive at the latter of those without facing the former head-on. You'll never build the latter if you cannot face up to the former.
