This concept of devalued and siphoned time/attention — its a beast of an opportunity cost. Part of the problem is that media content is intentionally packaged and gamed to lock our eyeballs on the screen. Spoiler, I don’t like taxes very much, so I wonder about other solutions?

There’s a lot of uneven terrain in this concept that would be bulldozed. Engaging creatively with new people online, watching documentaries, listening to thoughtful podcasts, etc. At what point would the tax be pushed back toward ‘distracting’ content creators? Tough decisions.

Fair point. Hard to discern between what is bad distraction and what is good distraction. The latter we're willing to undergo, the first, not so much. Though the text kinda addresses it by charging for services. If it's free, they distract you unwillingly make money

For sure! We live in a system intent on manipulating our attention. Have you heard of Tristan Harris? He explains these ideas in revelatory detail. It's all a bit spooky, to be honest. The most overt example I can think of is Snapchat streaks. So many more — many hidden from us.

http://humanetech.com/  Agreed! I heard that many of the contributors are folks who worked on social media projects deemed manipulative, made some money, felt bad, and are now trying to undo the trend they helped set in motion. That's ok and productive! But the $$ path tho
