This relates to a huge question I've been attempting to tackle over the past year or so. Why do we act in discordance with our values? Why do we do things we rationally don't want to be doing? What are the mechanisms by which we sabotage ourselves? May write something on this.https://twitter.com/TheRandyVandy/status/1085403651395502081 …

Maybe we just don't want to be told. Not even by ourselves. When we act in discordance with our values, we just act. We don't plan, we don't list, we don't schedule. We want to throw all that off.

Maybe something we can can do is, without slacking off completely, to not run our own lives as if we are our own manager. How self-hating is that? :-)

Essentially when we're telling ourselves what we've got to do, we're essentially being our own mother/father, and restricting our own freedom. What a thing to impose on ourselves! Well, no wonder we kick back.

Ah but the chaos of ultimate freedom is too much to bear! The sad truth is we need some semblance of order and rules so we can actually live out our lives. I'd rather be my own authoritarian dictator than leave that role to someone else

My first thought was, "Isn't the order of reality (including what is right, what makes sense) enough?" Is the background assumption here that there're no objectively right things, or nothing that 'makes sense' in choices (because it's mere preference)?

Yeah this is how I prefer to approach things; do what is apparent. Or as you say, "in the order of reality."

Maybe the answer is better / different / more effective habit-training? Things I'm happy to pay attention to I allow to emerge, for the things I really don't wanna do, tracking them by category after the event is way more effective than listing jobs out in specifically advance.

So this is more like being your own pet owner and giving yourself little treats 😄 The satisfaction of ticking things off that were never actually planned. This I find way less torturous than being your own dictator!
