I'd say it's because what we *think* we are and what we *are* is not in alignment. In other words, people have all sorts of ideas about human nature and their own nature that are no more than fantasies

True. In slowly dispelling the myths we hold regarding our own being (often the result of reducing complexity), I believe its possible to gain a greater awareness of how to essentially tame ourselves, lessen our cognitive dissonance, and improve our value/action alignment.
