As the year comes to an end, I reflect on a personal paradox between self-improvement and self-acceptance. Should we keep pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone to become something better? Or should we accept ourselves just the way we are and see beauty in our flaws?

Self improvement junkies, while frequently improving, appear to never be content with their lives. They constantly find flaws in themselves to always have something to work on. Often having a tendency to beat themselves up, in hopes they'll be happier...eventually.

Self acceptance hippies try to love themselves unconditionally, but struggle to achieve what is considered impossible or not "them". Often use acceptance as an excuse for laziness/ avoidance, to stay the same. As if there is even a consistent self to stay the same. Self limiting

This year, Ive experienced both ends of the spectrum. Each end resulted in stagnation, discontent, and apathy. But as a result of this, I learned an important lesson in being a good parent to yourself...now to the point that I frequently feel an older version watching over me.

Like your child, you accept them for how they are, and want them to be themselves. But you also want them to accept challenges to live their best life. You can love yourself for who you are, and use that same love to want more for yourself. Find the balance that's sustainable.

Don't be too hard on yourself. But also don't be too laid back. Understand yourself. Have meaningful goals. Develop grit to persist. Be patient. Have a fulfilling New Year!
