To add: If we are to spread life into the universe, then we'll need to take earth-life with us; not just humanity. Isn't just about our own survival. Are we going to show compassion towards other life on earth, and recognise their part in this whole thing?

I see our problems as pragmatic and meta. Politicians and business owners are (mostly and unfortunately) focused on the pragmatic. Elections, tax policies etc. An increasing minority are focused on the meta. Renewable energy for the sake of sustainability, colonisation etc.
-
Interesting perspective, though I think renewables etc. could also be considered as pragmatic solutions.
