Bah y you do me like this. Arguing against defining hate crimes means you would have to say the same for a crime like terrorism (political motive). I think classifying crimes based on motive has a social function i.e identifying trends so we can understand how to respond

Guides for interventionist policy. If there’s a whole bunch of crimes happening, you’ll want to know why. Only then can you experiment with ways for reducing it. E.g if there’s a lot of politically motivated crimes, you need to find some way of reducing political tension
