Every year Christmas becomes more commodified. Your love for family and friends is determined not by your commitment to their wellbeing, or the trust you share, but by how much you are willing to spend on them.
I encourage you to take a minimalist approach to Christmas.

Place emphasis on spending time (not money) with the people you love. If you wish to give gifts, ensure they are well thought out and will bring value to the receivers life. Don’t contribute needlessly to a materialist culture, and try when possible to minimise your waste.

Even better, use the ritual of gifts to practise your creativity. Write poetry, make beautiful cards, bake some sweets or paint a canvas.
Understand that market forces drive this increasingly consumerist Christmas culture, but that you don’t have to take part in it.
