If you only exchange ideas with people you agree with, you'll never learn anything. But civil discourse is an important element in learning.

Arguments are battles. You marshal arguments to attack positions your opponent defends. If your points are on target he may cede ground, but he will try to shoot down your arguments.

Good analogy. But battles of ideas quickly become attacks on people, which is a shame
