Empathy is a defining aspect of being human It’s not just caring for others, it’s the ability to experience their emotions second hand This is why books and films are so entertaining. Empathy gives us the power to not only watch or read something, but to actively feel it (VR?)

I agree with
@ToKTeacher that non-human animals can have empathy, and I feel that this elevates their status significantly. On the other hand, some humans lack it utterly, and I wonder about their status.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

It depends what they do - not feel. They’re still people. If it’s possible to not feel empathy and that actually causes one to do evil we should lock them up to the extent they’re shown dangerous. (I’m currently engrossed in this story of non-empathy: https://www.theaustralian.com.au/the-teachers-pet … )

(Although in these cases of apparent “psychopathy” I think a reasonable interpretation is not a lack of empathy but its devious misapplication. Like “I know exactly how you feel. I can feel it and I’m an evil sadist. It’s great”)

"Humans are parts of one body, and are from the same essence in their creation. When the conditions of the time hurt one of these parts, other parts will be disturbed. If you are indifferent about the misery of others, You may not deserve the name of human being." (Bani Adam)
